Rachel is an American Sign Language Teacher and a NIC National Certified Interpreter located in the Kansas City metro area who is passionate about Deaf people and equipping others to be able to converse and minister in and to the Deaf community.
She has worked as an interpreter in the Deaf community for over 6 years in a variety of settings including education, video relay service, theatre, freelance, medical, post secondary, ministry conferences, and sporting events in Washington D.C., Texas, Tennessee, Kansas, and Missouri. Rachel also taught an ASL I course for Midwestern State University's Continuing Education Department in 2006 and has had the opportunity to work with a Deaf-Blind consumer.

Fall Class Information

Intro. to American Sign Language (ASL)       
Ages 6 and up
Class meets once a week for 90 min.  6 week class.
This is a fun introductory course for students who are interested in learning some conversational signs and phrases, while gaining a general foundation and basic understanding of the “language” that is American Sign Language.  The students will learn through games, partner practice, a field trip, and videos.  No previous signing needed to take this course. Textbook not required as syllabus and vocabulary lists are included.
Course Objectives
* Learn over 300 conversational signs and several basic phrases and sentences
* Attain general information about Deaf culture, Deaf history, ASL, sign systems, non manual markers, body movement, gesturing, role shifting, and ASL sentence structure
* Develop fingerspelling skills
* Learn basic ASL numbers

American Sign Language I (ASL I)                                                                
Ages 13 (6th grade) - adult
Class meets once a week for 2 hrs.  16 week class.

The curriculum used in this course is the same curriculum used by most high schools and accredited universities.  Learn through classroom instruction, partner practice, games, a Deaf speaker, videos, a field trip, signing a song, quizzes, tests, and a silent dinner.  This is a enjoyable way to learn a foreign language and possibly earn dual foreign language college credit by taking a CLEP (College Level Examination Program) test.  No previous signing needed to take this course. 
Course Objectives:* Learn how to carry on everyday conversations with a Deaf person
* Understand basic ASL grammar rules (classifiers, non manual markers, facial expressions, body language, role shifting, gesturing, eye gaze and listing.)
* Learn over 1,000 signs and over 100 basic conversational phrases
* Develop an awareness of Deaf culture, values and history
* Acquire language fluency at a faster pace through partial immersion (classes taught in both ASL and English)
